Signed and dated ‘T Dawson 1905’ and
titled ‘Brighton’ and measuring 11.5” x 7” and 17” x 13”
including its original mahogany and gilt frame, this is a folk art,
comical and charming with slight ‘erotic’ overtones oil on canvas,
depicting a young lady flaunting her charms while her worried dog
looks on from her bathing hut. On the beach, a rather rude man
watches through his binoculars. It has an old, small patch and
touch-in to the waves but is invisible from the front. I think, as it
is by a folk art, primitive, naïve school artist, they have used
‘artistic license’, as the last time I looked there are no mountains
in Brighton!
